Animal farming is an activity that has increased dramatically in recent years, leading to a growth in the amount of pastureland. With regard to agricultural products, the types of crops are those found in traditional Mediterranean agriculture, in particular olives, cereals, grapevines and nuts:

Since organic production was first regulated, Catalonia has been at its forefront, due to its strong and highly diverse industrial activity. In 2005, Catalonia was the Spanish region with the highest number of organic producers: 369 (second was Andalusia with 320).
Figures for operators’ turnover in the year 2004 are available by clicking on:
Table showing turnover in organic products.
This table contains a box giving the turnover in organic products for operators registered with the council, divided into sectors. The figures are for the tax year 2004 and refer to turnover in the sale of products controlled and certified by the Council, i.e. they are not for the sale of organic products in Catalonia or consumption. The figures in the first and second column are overall figures in numbers and percentages, respectively. The following columns refer only to the companies and the destination of sold products. However, some companies do not declare where their products are sold, and these are included in the last column of the table. One of the tools used by the CCPAE to control certified organic agricultural products involves taking samples to verify the absence of prohibited substances. To make these results available to everyone who might be interested, the Council has published a document with a summary of the results of the analyses carried out during 2005. Data on the turnover of operators in the year 2005 is available by clicking on:
